Georgioupolis is a tranquil seaside village at the mouth of the Almiros River on the coast between Rethymno and Chania, offering one of the longest and most beautiful sandy beaches in all of Crete. The village takes its name from Prince George of Greece, the High Commissioner of the island at the turn of the 20th century, and has retained a peaceful, authentic Cretan character that makes it a favorite for families and couples seeking a genuine Greek island experience. The beach at Georgioupolis stretches for nearly nine kilometers, a vast expanse of fine sand and shallow, warm water that seems to go on forever. Even in the height of summer, there is always room to find your own quiet spot. The eastern end of the beach, near the Almiros River estuary, is home to a population of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that nest on the sand between May and August. A small turtle protection area has been set up, and visitors can sometimes see the turtles returning to the sea at dawn. The village itself is centered around a small harbor and a main square lined with eucalyptus trees, tavernas, and cafes. A narrow stone pier extends into the sea, leading to a tiny whitewashed chapel perched on a rock at its tip. This Chapel of Saint Nicholas has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Crete and is particularly magical at sunset. Inland from Georgioupolis, the freshwater Lake Kournas, the only natural lake in Crete, lies nestled in a valley surrounded by hills. Visitors can swim in the lake, rent pedal boats, or walk around its shores. The nearby villages of Kavros, Dramia, and Exopoli offer traditional Cretan tavernas and local wine. Your transfer from Chania Airport to Georgioupolis covers approximately 42 kilometers and takes about 40 minutes. From Heraklion Airport, the journey is approximately 120 kilometers and takes about 90 minutes along the national highway. Our drivers make these routes daily and will ensure a comfortable ride.
